The function of a power MOSFET is that of either a ‘dumb’ switch or as an ideal current source. At low voltages (≥12 and ≤60 V), silicon vertical trench devices dominate the market and since their introduction in the mid-1990s, significant improvements in both on-state resistance and switching performance have been achieved, which have come at a cost in both complexity and specialisation. Hidden from view, they play a critical role in virtually all electrical systems such as battery protection in lithium-ion battery packs, providing the energy to the processors that run the internet, and improving the fuel efficiency of cars in start–stop systems.
